Google’s AI answer is not the end of local search for contractors. It is the end of ranking a page and waiting for the phone to ring. The calls for a local trade start on the map, and the map got bigger this year. That is what we see in the local markets we scan for our partners, and the biggest search study of 2026 backs it up.
The study is DataForSEO’s Search Insider 2026 report, built on more than 190 million keywords and 165 million AI answers. Google now puts an AI answer at the top of 61% of searches, up from about 6% two years ago. When it shows, it takes 42 to 45% of the clicks. That sounds like bad news. For a trade business that does the right things, it is not. Here is how we read it.
What changed on Google this year

The AI answer box is called an AI Overview. It sits above everything else and answers the question in a few sentences, with links to the pages it pulled from. Two years ago it showed on 5.93% of searches. By August 2026 it showed on 61.43%.
It hits buying searches too, not only questions. Searches where someone is comparing options, like “best roofer near me,” showed an AI Overview 51% of the time in mid 2026, up from 26% at the end of 2025. Searches where someone is ready to buy went from 11% to 29%.
And it moves clicks. Across every kind of search the report measured, the AI Overview’s own links took 42 to 45% of the clicks when it appeared. The top regular result fell from 33 to 38% of clicks down to 21 to 24%.
Some old features are close to gone. The featured snippet box dropped from 8.96% of searches to 0.44%. Forum results dropped from 21% to 7%.
The map pack grew while the rest shrank

This is the part that matters most for a local trade. While the AI box pushed other results down, the local map pack grew. The report has it in 25.99% of searches by August 2026, up from 19.98%.
The map pack is the box with three businesses and a map that shows up when someone searches for a service near them. For a plumber, an electrician or a landscaper, that is where the calls come from. Google says in its own guide to local ranking that it ranks those three spots on relevance, distance and prominence, and prominence includes your reviews and your rating.
We saw how that plays out when we scanned a real market for a landscaping and snow company in Connecticut. The business winning the map had fewer reviews than our client but a better rating and categories that matched the search exactly. We wrote up the full scan in local SEO for home services. The new report does not change any of that. If anything, it makes the map pack the safest place to be.
Clicks on phones held up

The report tracked how often people clicked the top results between September 2025 and August 2026. On desktop, the number one result fell from 17.83% of clicks to 7.43%. Number two fell from 15.27% to 3.07%.
Phones were a different story. The number one result on mobile went from 25.17% to 20.80%, a much smaller drop. The number two result actually went up a little.
Most homeowners looking for a tree service or an HVAC tech are on their phone, often standing in the yard or the basement looking at the problem. So a top three spot on mobile is still worth a lot of calls. The report does not say for sure why desktop fell harder, but the gap is large and it lines up with how local service searches happen.
Where Google’s AI answer gets its information

The AI answer has to quote someone. The report counted which sites it quotes the most. YouTube was first by a wide margin with 51.9 million citations. Reddit was second with 25.1 million, then Facebook with 20.4 million, Wikipedia, Google itself and Instagram.
Six of the top ten were video, social or community sites. That tells you where Google looks when it builds an answer about a local job: videos showing the work, and real people talking about who they hired.
The report also found that Home and Garden is one of the least cited industries, with relatively few domains and low citation counts. For a trade business, that is an opening. There is not much competition for those spots yet, and most of your competitors are not posting job videos to YouTube or showing up in local Facebook groups.
Reddit is worth watching too. It showed up in Google’s top 10 for 32.15% of searches in the third quarter of 2026, and that share held steady all year. When someone in your area asks who to call for a roof leak, those threads can rank right next to your business.
Links from other sites still count

Some people say links from other sites do not matter anymore. The report says otherwise. Businesses ranking number one had a median of 111 other sites linking to them, against 85 for positions 4 to 10. That is 31% more.
The same pattern showed up in the AI answers. The more sites linking to a business, the more often the AI cited it. The report is careful to say this shows the two move together, not that links alone cause citations. But it means the basics still pay off twice: once in the regular results and once in the AI box.
For a local contractor, good links are the ones that come naturally from being part of the town. Your supplier’s dealer page. The youth team you sponsor. The chamber of commerce. A local news story about a storm cleanup. Verified directory profiles that link back to you.
What we would focus on this month
This is the order we would work in for a trade business right now. None of it is a new trick. It is the fundamentals, aimed at where Google is sending people now.
- Get your rating up. The map pack is growing, and rating is one of the things Google uses to pick the top three. Ask every happy customer, right after the job.
- Match your categories to the searches you want. Your Google profile categories decide which searches you are even in the running for.
- Put your job videos on YouTube. YouTube is the site Google’s AI answer quotes most. A 30 second clip of a finished job, titled with the service and the town, gives it something to quote.
- Show up where locals talk. Town Facebook groups and local Reddit threads are where people ask for recommendations, and Google reads them.
- Earn links from your town. Sponsors, suppliers, the chamber and local news. Real links from real local sites.
Searches are also getting longer. On desktop, searches with five or more words went from 29.3% to 34.8% of all searches. Longer searches are usually real questions, like “how much does a fall cleanup cost for a half acre.” Pages that answer those questions plainly, with your town and your price, give both Google and its AI answer something to work with.
Quick answers
What is a Google AI Overview?
It is the AI written answer Google shows at the top of the results, above the regular listings. It answers the question in a few sentences and links to the pages it used. It showed on 61.43% of searches by August 2026.
Do AI Overviews hurt contractors?
They take clicks from the regular results, about 42 to 45% when they appear. But the local map pack grew over the same period, from 19.98% to 25.99% of searches, and clicks on phones held up much better than on desktop. For a local trade, the map pack is still where most calls start.
How do I get my business cited in Google’s AI answer?
The sites it quotes most are YouTube, Reddit and Facebook. Job videos on YouTube, real mentions in local groups and links from other local sites all line up with the businesses that get cited most in the report.
Do reviews still matter with AI search?
Yes. Google’s own guide to local ranking names reviews and ratings as part of prominence, and the map pack is one of the few parts of Google that grew this year. In the market we scanned, the rating was the gap, not the review count.
Where this leaves you
Google is changing fast, but the change mostly hurts businesses that relied on ranking a page and waiting for clicks. A trade business that wins the map, has a strong rating, shows its work on video and is part of its town is in a better spot than it was a year ago. Fewer competitors are doing those things well, and Google is sending more people to the map.
That is the work we do for trade owners: get the calls you have already earned, and stop losing the ones Google is about to send you. If you want us to look at where your business stands, apply to become a partner.
